Voices of the Earth, The Art and the Artists Behind the Songs and Videos
We chose this name from the lyrics of a song of the same title, written by 4th Grade students of Pomaikaʻi Elementary School in March of 2020, just before Covid pandemic put us all in isolation. It was part of a songwriting residency and music video arts-integration/education whole album project that focused on endangered species of Hawaiʻi called, Sing for the Earth!
And now we needed a logo...

The Voices of the Earth, are asking us to remember
When we used to know all, the names of the wind,
When our feet could feel her skin, our arms would hug her trees
And we listened so, we would know, what she needs.

She speaks our names in a million ways
Through the songs of the birds, in the roaring waves
In the tall swaying grass to the tiniest snail.
Come and listen, listen, listen to The Voices of the Earth.

Look at me right now, do I have your attention?
You may think you are nothing, but you are alive.
You have eyes that let you see and ears to listen
To the sweet singing sounds, almost too soft to hear.

In August of 2021, we began working with Chelsea Khol of Flying Okole to help us create a brand and a logo. In our imagineering, we visualized our multi-media arts, music and songs impacting the entire globe. With the earth at the center, she created an image of an arc of sound frequencies of many wave-lengths, representing all sentient beings, the unheard voices of the plants, animals mountains, rivers and deserts that sing to us in their many languages every day. Voices of the Earth are the voices of the voice-less that speak through us in our songs and music and multi-media art. And their message is clear.
The color Blue evokes both the sky and the sea and is associated with open spaces, freedom, intuition, imagination, inspiration, and sensitivity. Blue also represents meanings of depth, trust, loyalty, sincerity, wisdom, confidence, stability, faith, and intelligence. And if you are a student of Eastern Practices, the color Blue is the 5th Chakra, the throat and the Voice.
The black night sky and twinkling stars background is an homage to the Hawaiian Celestial Navigators, the brave wayfinders who dared to venture into new seas and land, and for the Hawaiian Culture, whose ALOHA roots and values we honor and incorporate into every project we create.
You may note that the position of the Earth Globe places Hawaiʻi in the center of the logo. Thatʻs because When We Shine Foundation is based in the Hawaiian Islands and from our unique geographic perspective in the world, we are a destination for millions of people each year.
